Walk and Talk Therapy

Sometimes it's good to get out in real weather, it can bring out a lot of things. It's exactly as it sounds: instead of meeting me in the confines of a practice, the session is held outside while walking. And the natural environment acts as a calming backdrop to any issues up for discussion. Somehow the simple act of walking while talking out life's issues creates an environment of possibility and change.

This form of therapy works well for anxiety, depression, bereavement, work-related stress, anger issues, and addiction. Some of my clients are people finding everyday life a real struggle but for whom traditional therapy is a turn-off. Another group of clients for whom walking therapy works well are professionals from Cork City, many of whom have lost their contact with nature and would like to regain it.

Obvious advantages to walking outdoors is that it is a multi-sensory experience, linked to higher levels of oxytocin, the 'feel-good' hormone secreted by the pituitary gland. Walking also reduces blood pressure and encourages clients to exercise or at least spend more time outdoors.
